Jonah
QUICK SUMMARY
One of the most enduring tales of all time – Jonah in the Belly of the Whale – can be found here in the Book of Jonah in the Hebrew Bible / Christian Old Testament, as well as in the Quran. A short narrative about the prophet Jonah’s mission to the city of Nineveh, it combines historical narrative, allegory, and theological reflection.
The story begins with God commanding Jonah to go to Nineveh, the capital of Assyria, and proclaim judgment against its wickedness. However, Jonah rebels and flees in the opposite direction, boarding a ship bound for Tarshish. During the journey, a great storm arises, and the sailors, recognizing Jonah's guilt, throw him overboard at his request. Jonah is then swallowed by a “great fish” sent by God and spends three days and nights in its belly, where he repents and prays for deliverance.
Upon being vomited onto dry land, Jonah obeys God's command and travels to Nineveh, where he preaches a message of impending doom. All the people of Nineveh, from the king to the commoners, heed Jonah's warning and repent, leading God to spare the city from destruction.
However, Jonah is displeased with God's mercy and sulks outside the city. God rebukes Jonah, teaching him about compassion and the value of human life, regardless of nationality or circumstance.
