Zephaniah
QUICK SUMMARY
“The day of the Lord” features more heavily than in any other book of the minor prophets in the Old Testament, where Zephaniah (whose name means “Protected by Yahweh”) warns of the impending judgment of Judah due to idolatry and disobeying God’s commandments. Written in Judea during King Josiah’s rule. In his book, he describes the devastation that will come upon Judah and Jerusalem, including the destruction of cities and the pouring out of God's wrath. The prophet warns of a day of darkness, distress, and anguish, calling on the people to repent before it is too late.
He also predicts the downfall of Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Cush, and Assyria, punishment for their arrogance, violence, and oppression. Zephaniah also condemns Jerusalem for its rebellion and corruption, rebuking its officials, prophets, and priests for their unfaithfulness. Despite the city's wickedness, Zephaniah foretells a future day of salvation when God will gather the nations, purify his people, and dwell among them in peace and righteousness.
