The Second General Epistle of Peter
QUICK SUMMARY
Attributed to Peter the Apostle, The Second Epistle of Peter to various churches throughout Asia Minor, is quite different that his first letter. Its three chapters show the relationship between Christian thought and the doctrine of Jesus of Nazareth, ethics, and eschatology (death, judgement and the fate of souls in the afterlife). Giving seven virtues in the form of a ladder, Peter encourages believers to live godly and holy lives, so that they may redeem themselves and be held blameless upon The Second Coming of Christ.
Peter also warns against false teachers and their destructive teachings, urging believers to be discerning and to hold fast to the truth of Scripture.
2 Peter is also notable for its reference to the Transfiguration of Christ, which Peter witnessed firsthand along with James and John. Peter uses this event to emphasize the certainty of Christ's coming and the importance of heeding the prophetic word as a light shining in a dark place.
