The Acts of the Apostles
QUICK SUMMARY
Acts, or The Acts of the Apostles, written by Luke (a companion of Saint Paul), is unique among the books of the New Testament, telling the story of the founding of Christianity after the crucifixion of Jesus through the Acts of his disciples. Though a continuation of The Gospel of Luke, it comes after John’s gospel in the New Testament, and serves as the most complete devotional history of the activity of Christians in the first century.
According to scripture, the seventh Sunday and 50 days after the resurrection of Jesus (thus the name Pentecost), the Virgin Mary and disciples of Jesus were visited by the Holy Ghost while visiting Jerusalem to celebrate the Feast of Weeks. Speaking in tongues of every nation on earth, they baptized 3,000 and set off to spread their teachings throughout Jerusalem, where they were met with great resistance, then Greece, Cyprus, and even Rome itself during the Roman Empire. Acts serves as a crucial historical and theological link, portraying the early Church's growth particularly among the Gentiles.
In Acts you’ll find famous events such as the Day of Pentecost, the “moveable feast”; Speaking in Tongues; Saint Paul’s Arrest; how Christianity became accepted throughout Greece; Saint Paul’s Conversion and Meeting Jesus; the miracles of the apostles; and more.
