Amos

QUICK SUMMARY

Amos, written by one of the Twelve Minor Prophets during the 8th Century BC reigns of Jeroboam II and Uzziah, is known mostly for its dark tone and violent characterization of God. Critical of the sins of the Israelites and surrounding nations, with God expecting his chosen people to be just as righteous as anyone, Amos is the first prophet to use the famous phrase, “The Day of the Lord,” which features prominently in other prophetic and apocalyptic works. While in other cases, this is usually meant as the day the Lord delivers Israel out of the hands of its enemies, in the case of Amos, it is meant as a dark day of reckoning upon Israel for its sins against the innocent and the poor.
